Masteman HSA Environmental Committee

UPDATE:

We want the entire Masterman community to have all the available information and hope sharing this gives everyone a better understanding.

The art room was reopened on Friday of last week (11/5/21) following a steampipe leak (steampipes reach 212 degrees F). To repair the leak, asbestos-containing pipe insulation needed to be removed, creating its own set of associated risks, as any time this insulation is cut, the risk of releasing asbestos fibers is present.

The day after the issue was reported (11/5/21), Jerry Roseman, Environmental Director of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT), contacted Steve Link, Office of Environmental Management Services (OEMS) Director of the SDP, and arranged for a joint meeting that afternoon to view the asbestos abatement and pipe repair work area. An art room teacher and one building committee teacher representative were also on hand.

Attached, is the report that Mr. Roseman submitted, following his joint inspection with Mr. Link. To date, the recommendations he submitted to cover all steampipe with protective covers and issue reports documenting work done have not been implemented. The results of the PCM air test reports were recently shared with the art room teacher (also attached), showing low fiber counts in the air. However, please note that Mr. Roseman previously recommended that a TEM air test be performed to determine whether the fibers are asbestos fibers as a “best practice” for asbestos management in schools.

Room 14, the art room, serves as a classroom for most grades in the school and a daily work space for two teachers. We want all parents to be aware of this unresolved situation that puts our students and teachers at risk. And that it is the recommendation of Mr. Roseman that the room not be used by students or teachers until his recommendations have been implemented.

Emergency environmental committee meeting Thursday, Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m.

The HSA has formalized an Asbestos and Environmental Committee. We encourage participation from all parents, and anyone with specific knowledge or background would be especially helpful. Anyone interested in joining this committee should email environmental@mastermanhsa.org.

As we seek to understand and navigate asbestos and environmental issues at Masterman and in the district, we at the HSA wish to share comprehensive and poignant information that gives parents and stakeholders a deeper understanding to best synthesize information.

Here are some helpful documents which will provide background information regarding asbestos and environmental issues at Masterman and in the Philadelphia community as a whole.

Please sign the petition and join our letter writing campaign.  Let our city and state leaders know that the District must be transparent and accountable. They must openly and completely share detailed information about the health and safety of our school buildings, in real time – not after the damage to our children’s health has been done. The District must work collaboratively with families and staff at all stages of planning and implementation.

The lack of meaningful engagement of families and stakeholders, in a timely and collaborative manner, is a District wide issue that must not be tolerated any longer!
